How can you tell a worm’s head from its rear?

This is an embarrassing question. We can’t tell you the number of times that people have tried to talk to a worm’s rear end because they confused it with his head.

The back end of the worm is slightly wider and less pointy than the front end of a worm. Also, the worm’s head is closer to that strange band (a “clitellum”) around a worm’s body. And if you look really, really close, you might see a worm’s mouth. This is where the worm pulls in food.

Where’s this worm’s head? It’s on the right side. The head is usually narrower than the tail. Also, the head is closer to that strange band, known as the “clitellum.”
