What is water treatment?

“Water treatment” is just another way of saying that water is cleaned up.

There are two main types of water treatment:

Wastewater treatment. Water from our sanitary sewers is cleaned up at a wastewater treatment plant before it is sent to a lake or river.

Drinking water treatment. Water from a lake, river, or well is cleaned up at a water treatment plant before it is sent to our homes for drinking.

One of the steps in cleaning wastewater coming from our homes is called “aeration.” This is when air is added to the water to drive out some of the gases. Pictured here are “aeration basins” in Redmond, Oregon.
