Nope. Soil is made up of three main types of particles:
Sand. The largest soil particles. You can see single sand particles with your eyes.
Silt. These are a lot smaller than sand. If you want to see a single silt particle, you’ll need a microscope.
Clay. The smallest soil particles. If you want to see one of these babies, use a powerful electron microscope.
To get an idea of how the sizes compare, let’s say the largest sand particle has been blown up to the size of a giant, 8-foot boulder--kind of like the boulder in Raiders of the Lost Ark.
If the largest sand particle were the size of a boulder, then the smallest sand particle would be about the size of a baseball.
Silt particles would be smaller than a baseball but larger than a BB.
Clay particles would be anything smaller than a BB.
Sand is the largest type of soil particle. The smallest soil particles are clay, while silt is the middle size.
