Terraces look like long, grassy speed bumps, or ridges, on the ground. Farmers build them across fields to slow the flow of runoff water on slopes. As water moves downhill, it is slowed by the terrace ridge. Water that is slowed down cannot erode soil as easily.
Terraces are grassy ridges built across a slope to catch runoff water and reduce soil erosion.
