State-by-State Erosion Rates

Understanding the Table

The table in this section provides soil erosion data for all U.S. states, except where figures were not available.

The table shows the rate of erosion caused by water, as well as the rate of erosion caused by wind. An “erosion rate” is the average amount of soil eroded from a single acre of cropland in a year.

Note: This table focuses only on erosion on cropland. Also, an acre of land is slightly smaller than a football field.

Where Do These Numbers Come From?

The Natural Resources Conservation Service collects soil erosion information as part of the National Resources Inventory, or NRI.
