Make it Rain!

Here’s your chance to create a miniature city complete with a storm sewer system. Then make it rain!

With this kit, students put down various pretend contaminants on the City of Ooze, a booming metropolis created out of popular toys. Then they use spray bottles to create a rainstorm. In dramatic fashion, runoff water flows downslope, picks up the pretend contaminants, and flows into the storm sewers.

This is a vivid demonstration of how stormwater runoff can carry pollutants into our storm sewers and how the sewers transport this contaminated water directly to a lake, river, or wetland.

Target Age

The Stormwater Hands-on Science Kit targets students from kindergarten through sixth grade.

Kit Supplies

Here’s what you’ll receive in the Stormwater Hands-on Science Kit:

  • 1 plastic base, 311/2" by 471/2", with PVC pipe (storm sewer) attached
  • 2 pieces of green felt (simulated lawn)
  • 5 toy cars
  • 4 toy buildings/construction site
  • 2 dinosaurs
  • 2 figurines
  • 1 3-foot roadway
  • 3 pieces of train track
  • 4 spray bottles
  • 1 plastic lagoon (represents a lake)
  • 1 container of powdered fruit drink mix (pretend pesticide)
  • 1 container of cocoa mix (pretend manure)
  • 1 container of cake crystals (pretend fertilizer)
  • 1 bag of soil
  • 3 plastic spoons (to scoop fruit drink mix, cocoa, and soil)
  • 4 styrofoam bricks to prop up the city base
  • 40 top-secret file folders
  • 1 Stormwater Teacher’s Packet, which includes a copy of the Beneath the City of Ooze book, the Mission Possible II teacher’s guide, a Secret Agent Worm poster, 40 E.A.R.T.H. temporary tattoos, 40 Secret Agent Worm membership cards, and 6 activity sheets.

What About Replacement Items?

With the Stormwater Hands-on Science Kit, the only items that get used up are the fruit drink mix, cocoa mix, cake crystals, and soil. When these items are used up, they can be easily obtained at your local grocery and garden stores. So there's no need to order a Replacement Pack with this kit!
